Information
TITLE:
Consideration of Appointment:
Sustainability Commission.
STAFF RECOMMENDED ACTION:
Consideration of extension of two terms to October 2026.
Executive Summary:
The Sustainability Commission consists of seven residents and is responsible for recommending and coordinating activities in concert with the City of Flagstaff Sustainability Program. To accomplish this objective, the Commission will address the social, economic, and environmental considerations of meeting the needs of current and future residents. Among the Commission’s directives are the promotion of sustainable practices in all spheres of life and educating Flagstaff residents.
Previously staff asked for Council to appoint two members to the Sustainability Commission for a period of three-months rather than including those three months in the next full term. Staff would like to request that
Councilmember Harris
and
Councilmember Sweet
consider extending the terms of Priscilla Boateng and Mary Ellen Metzger to October 2026 so that these members can serve more than a three-month term.
Financial Impact:
These are voluntary positions and there is no budgetary impact to the City of Flagstaff.
Policy Impact:
Not applicable.
Connection to PBB Priorities/Objectives, Carbon Neutrality Plan & Regional Plan:
Inclusive and Engaged Community -
Foster community pride and civic engagement; advance social equity and social justice in Flagstaff; facilitate and foster diversity and inclusivity; and enhance community outreach and engagement opportunities.
Has There Been Previous Council Decision on This:
None
Options and Alternatives:
Extend two terms on the Commission: By extending the two terms of the members at this time, Council can ensure continuity on the Sustainability Commission and ensure that it will stay at full membership, allowing the group to meet and provide recommendations to the City Council.
Postpone the action to allow for further discussion or expand the list of candidates.
Community Involvement:
The City's boards, commissions, and committees were created to foster public participation and input and to encourage Flagstaff citizens to take an active role in city government.
Expanded Options and Alternatives:
INFORM: The vacancies are posted on the City's website and individual recruitment and mention of the openings by Board members and City staff has occurred, informing others of these vacancies through word of mouth.
