Mission Statement and Land Acknowledgment
MISSION STATEMENT
A commission to foster support, respect, awareness and appreciation of diversity among all citizens of Flagstaff.
LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
The Commission on Diversity Awareness humbly acknowledges the ancestral homelands of this area’s Indigenous nations and original stewards. These lands, still inhabited by Native descendants, border mountains sacred to Indigenous peoples. We honor them, their legacies, their traditions, and their continued contributions. We celebrate their past, present, and future generations who will forever know this place as home.

Proclamations Work Group Update: Update provided by Carolyn Kidd, Bethany Camp, Mandy Gebler |
|
Chair Toner asked for an update on the proclamation for Jewish Heritage Month. The commission discussed what guidelines or structure would be followed to determine when a proclamation may or may not be appropriate as it relates the religion and spirituality. Liaison Keita pointed our that there is a rise in antisemitism and hate crimes and that Jewish cultural identity, not religious affiliation, is what is being considered for the proclamation, which would make Jewish Heritage Month akin to Black History Month or Italian History Month. The commission agreed to differentiate between cultural identity and religion in regards to the proclamation. Chair Toner asked for the work group to have discussion and come back to the commission with a recommendation. |
